Spring ascent to Vrsuta: nature, history and rakia

Dear subscribers!

On April 13, 2025, we climbed to the top of Vrsuta, one of the most picturesque and little-known corners of Montenegro. The date was not chosen by chance: at this time of year, wild daffodils bloom on the slopes of the mountain, creating a magical picture of spring nature. Despite the fact that some of the flowers had already faded, and the weather was capricious this year, we still caught the blooming, as well as – unexpectedly! – snow. And yes, we sculpted Buhovik right on the slope!

It was not just a trip, but a real adventure – with beauty, physical activity and, of course, surprises. As usual, we did not forget about the most exciting part of the hike: two bottles of homemade rakia were hidden in our backpacks. Yes, friends, the stakes are rising!

Where is Vrsuta?

Vrsuta is a mountain range located near the town of Sutomore in the southern part of Montenegro. The highest point, Mount Vrsuta, reaches an altitude of 1,190 meters above sea level, and its “younger sister,” Mala Vrsuta, is about 909 meters high. These mountains are part of the Dinaric Alps, which stretch along the Adriatic coast.

The region is distinguished by an amazing combination of maritime climate and mountain nature. During the ascent, panoramic views of the coast, the city of Bar open up, and in clear weather you can even discern Albania.

Spring bloom: daffodils and orchids

A special feature of April hikes to Vrsuta is wild daffodils (Narcissus poeticus), which bloom at altitudes of about 700 meters. These flowers are also called “poetic daffodils” for their subtle beauty and aroma. They are considered one of the earliest harbingers of spring.

Along with daffodils, you can also find the rare butterfly orchid (Anacamptis papilionacea) on the slopes. Its bright pink-purple flowers resemble a butterfly in flight, hence the name. This species is included in the protected list of Montenegrin flora and is quite rare, which makes its discovery especially joyful for nature lovers and botanists.

Monuments and history

During the route to the summit, travelers pass through a mountain pass where a monument to the heroes of World War II is erected. It is dedicated to the inhabitants of these places who fought for freedom and courage in the fight against the fascist occupiers. This place is not only a rest point on the route, but also a moment to reflect on the past and the connection between generations.

How does the ascent go?

The route to Vrsuta starts near Sutomore, and the ascent takes about 2-3 hours at a moderate pace. The road runs along picturesque paths, among rocks and forest. The physical activity is moderate and suitable for most people with basic physical fitness. Along the way – silence, fresh air, flowers, and in the spring – snow surprises.

Rakia – a hiking tradition

And as has already become our good tradition, on this hike we have prepared a surprise for those who decide to repeat our route. At the site of the camp near the monument to the heroes of World War II, we again hid TWO bottles of rakia. You can find all the clues and coordinates on the page of the site dedicated to quests. Good luck in your search!

Conclusion

Climbing Vrsuta is not just a route through the mountains. It is an encounter with the nature, history and culture of Montenegro. It is an opportunity to stop, breathe in the scent of wild flowers, see distant sea expanses and remember the simple joys of life.

If you have not been to Vrsuta yet – we highly recommend it! And if you have been – come back in the spring. Who knows, maybe next time you will also mold your Bukhovik?
