A year after reports that the Old Olive Tree in Mirovica (Bar)<\/strong> was drying out and at risk, good news has arrived \u2013 the tree is recovering. Thanks to intensive care<\/strong>, new shoots are now sprouting even from its oldest sections.<\/p>\n

The Old Olive Tree<\/strong> is not only a natural<\/strong> but also a cultural monument<\/strong>, and one of Bar’s most significant symbols. This year, it celebrates its 2,250th anniversary<\/strong>. The tree is protected by law, and in 2020, the municipal authorities officially declared it a protected area<\/strong>. The park surrounding the tree was renovated in 2005<\/strong> following a decision by the City Council of Bar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In early 2023<\/strong>, concerns about the tree\u2019s condition sparked debates among local residents, olive producers, and the wider public<\/strong>. At that time, it was under the management of the Cultural Center<\/strong>, which later transferred its care to the Bar Olive Growers Association<\/strong>. Representatives of the association claimed they had warned authorities four years earlier<\/strong> about the tree\u2019s declining health, but their concerns had been ignored. Eventually, the Ku\u0107a Maslina<\/strong> company took over the management and restoration efforts.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

For a long time, the tree had been exposed to severe stress due to various external and internal factors<\/strong>. However, experts now positively assess its condition, comparing it with previous seasons, and further measures<\/strong> are planned in the coming months to strengthen its health.<\/p>\n

Scientific Efforts to Restore the Tree<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Maria Marko\u010d, Director of the House of Olives<\/strong>, agronomist, forensic expert in olive and oil production, Mediterranean fruit cultivation, and land reclamation<\/strong>, and a certified sommelier<\/strong> of extra virgin olive oils, told Vijesti<\/em> that their efforts have yielded visible results<\/strong> \u2013 the tree\u2019s health has significantly improved. She highlighted that signs of rejuvenation<\/strong> are evident through the emergence of new leaves and numerous side shoots<\/strong> near the tree\u2019s base.<\/p>\n

At the end of 2023<\/strong> and the beginning of 2024<\/strong>, crucial work was carried out to drain surface and groundwater levels<\/strong>, implementing a new drainage system<\/strong>. In collaboration with agronomists from Croatia<\/strong> and leading specialists from the International Olive Council (Madrid)<\/strong>, a comprehensive agrotechnical program<\/strong> was launched. This program included:
\n\u2705 Sanitary pruning<\/strong>
\n\u2705 Controlled crown protection<\/strong>
\n\u2705 Soil irrigation with biostimulants<\/strong>
\n\u2705 Stimulating the root system for revitalization<\/strong><\/p>\n

To improve soil composition<\/strong>, experts decided to dig the soil to a depth of 10 cm<\/strong> near the tree and 50 cm at the outer edges of the green zone<\/strong>. This intervention enhanced water and air balance<\/strong> in the soil, thanks to the addition of a mixture of humus and quartz sand<\/strong>. By early 2024<\/strong>, these measures resulted in an abundance of new young shoots<\/strong> sprouting from the tree.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Additionally, experts from the International Olive Council (Madrid)<\/strong> and the University of C\u00f3rdoba<\/strong> participated in the tree\u2019s restoration. In autumn 2024<\/strong>, university representatives personally visited<\/strong> the site to analyze the tree\u2019s condition. Following their research, a plan of agrotechnical and auxiliary measures for 2025<\/strong> was developed, along with genetic testing of the plant material<\/strong>. The results confirmed the authenticity of the tree\u2019s variety<\/strong> and proved that the Old Olive Tree is unique<\/strong>, not only in Montenegro but across the entire Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n

The Tree\u2019s Natural Ability to Regenerate<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Like other ancient olive trees<\/strong>, the Old Olive Tree<\/strong> has a strong ability to regenerate<\/strong>. By awakening dormant buds<\/strong>, experts have observed new shoots growing from its oldest sections<\/strong>, confirming its vitality and continued survival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Future Plans and Protection Measures<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Beyond agricultural and technical measures, in 2025<\/strong>, the House of Olives<\/strong> plans to implement several projects to commemorate the tree\u2019s 2,250th anniversary<\/strong>, including:
