Kolašin, Montenegro 2026: A Place Where Even the Tea Tastes Better Because It’s Surrounded by Mountains (and Beats)

Starlight’s Winter Vacation in Kolašin, Montenegro: January 6–8, 2026

In early January 2026, the Starlight group spent three snowy days in Kolašin, a cozy mountain town in northern Montenegro that becomes the center of the country’s ski scene in winter. It’s easy to find that perfect balance: mountains, pistes, and walks among the pine-covered slopes during the day, and warm cafes, a friendly atmosphere, and music in the evening.

Kolašin: A Small Town with a Big Alpine Feel

Kolašin is located in the mountainous part of Montenegro at an altitude of over 900 meters above sea level, near the Tara River and approximately 70 km from Podgorica, making it easy to get to even for a short weekend.

The town is especially beautiful in winter: a neat center, cafes serving hot drinks, the scent of pine in the air, and the feeling of being surrounded by a natural “amphitheater” of mountain ranges.

Main attractions and itinerary ideas

1) Kolašin 1450 and Kolašin 1600 ski resorts

Kolašin is rightfully considered Montenegro’s main winter destination: two connected ski resorts, 1450 and 1600, operate near the town. This place is suitable for both beginners (schools/instructors) and those who want to confidently ski all day: well-groomed slopes, lifts, and beautiful views of the Bjelasica massif.

As it was at Starlight: daytime slope excursions, photos against the backdrop of snow-covered fir trees, coffee breaks, and that pleasant “muscle” high when in the evening you realize you’ve had a very active day.

2) Biogradska Gora National Park – ancient forest and lakes

If you’re looking for unfiltered nature, Biogradska Gora is a must-see. The park is famous for being home to one of Europe’s last remaining stands of primeval forest, and the trees in the protected area reach impressive ages and heights.

Even in winter, the park has a special atmosphere: silence, snow on the branches, and routes for leisurely walks (depending on the weather and road access).

3) Morača River Canyon and Morača Monastery

The road to Kolašin can be an experience in itself: the section between Podgorica and Kolašin runs along the Morača River Canyon – narrow, dramatic, and very photogenic.

Also nearby is the Morača Monastery, founded in 1252 – one of Montenegro’s most famous medieval monuments. It’s about 25 km from Kolašin by car – convenient for a short trip.

4) Tara and the “grand” landscapes of the north

Kolašin is located near the Tara River, and further north is the famous Tara Canyon in the Durmitor region: a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is noted that the deepest gorges in Europe are located along the Tara Canyon.

If you’re planning a vacation longer than three days, this is a great destination to expand your itinerary.

Outdoor Hub: A Place Where the Evening Begins with Music

A special attraction for our group is the Outdoor Hub in Kolašin. It’s not just a place to hang out, but a format: a space connected to outdoor culture and community, known in the city as a hub for active youth. The venue’s profile emphasizes its philosophy—”built for mud, not comfort”—and also that it’s the home of the Sampas and Kabanya projects in Kolašin.

What’s especially nice is that the Outdoor Hub often becomes an evening stage. Local announcements and posters regularly feature live performances and DJ sets here (they list the Outdoor Hub venue, Kolašin, Milivoja Bulatovića Street).

There’s also a very realistic description from guests: “The first stop is for good coffee, gear, and evening svirka (live music)…”

The atmosphere is what makes it so popular: action and mountains during the day, and in the evening, a friendly atmosphere, a rhythm, people “on the same wavelength,” and the feeling that Kolašin is not just a resort, but a vibrant community.

  • Beautiful roads and impressive sites like Morača Canyon and Morača Monastery,
  • And warm evenings at Outdoor Hub with music and DJ sets.
