We’ve just returned from an unforgettable trip to Tivat, where we attended the MonteGames Conference 2024, held on October 25-26. It was an incredible event that brought together people passionate about gaming, technology, and creative industries. But beyond the conference itself, this trip was an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the unique atmosphere of Tivat and explore its breathtaking natural spots.
A Little About Tivat
Tivat is a real gem on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro. A small town that perfectly combines the charm of history and modern luxury. The Porto Montenegro marina, cozy old streets, and stunning mountain views make this place truly special.
We were enchanted by every corner of this town! One of the most memorable moments was waking up early to the fresh sea breeze, with mountains rising in the distance. And speaking of mountains, one of the highlights of our trip was visiting Vrmac.
Austro-Hungarian Fortress Vrmac: A Silent Guardian of the Bay of Kotor
Hidden among the lush greenery of Montenegro’s Vrmac Mountain, the Austro-Hungarian Fortress Vrmac stands as a powerful reminder of the region’s turbulent history. Built at the end of the 19th century by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this fortress once played a crucial role in protecting the strategic Bay of Kotor, one of the most important naval points in the Adriatic Sea.
A Glimpse into History
Construction of the fortress began in 1894 and was completed in 1897 as part of a broader defense system aimed at safeguarding the southern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The fortress was part of a network of military structures built along the coastline to prevent attacks from both sea and land.
Located at an elevation of 480 meters, Vrmac Fortress offered a commanding view over the Bay of Kotor, Tivat, and Lustica Peninsula. This strategic position allowed the garrison to monitor and defend against potential threats coming from the Adriatic Sea or the mountainous interior.
The fortress itself is a classic example of Austro-Hungarian military architecture: robust stone walls, underground tunnels, storage facilities, and fortified gun positions. It was equipped with cannons, artillery, and a barracks complex, capable of accommodating a significant number of soldiers.
Tivat Salt Pans (Solila) — A Sanctuary of Peace and Flamingos!
Another must-visit spot in Tivat is the Tivat Salt Pans, or Solila, a nature reserve with salt marshes that serve as a habitat for rare bird species — including flamingos! Yes, flamingos in Montenegro!
Walking through Solila feels like stepping into another world. It’s peaceful, serene, with only the sounds of nature surrounding you. If you’re lucky, you might spot flamingos gracefully wandering in the shallow waters, adding a touch of magic to the experience.
MonteGames Conference — Energy and Creativity
Of course, the main reason for our trip was the MonteGames Conference, one of the biggest gaming industry events in the region. The conference gathered people from various countries, creating a space for exchanging ideas, sharing success stories, and getting inspired by new trends.
We dove deep into the world of game development, attended some amazing talks, and most importantly, met incredible people with whom we exchanged experiences and ideas.
After two days in Tivat, one thing is certain: this town leaves a mark on your heart. Its unique blend of nature, history, and modern lifestyle sparks creativity and inspiration, making you want to return again and again.
Until next time, Tivat!
